The seed from a McIntosh apple will not grow a true McIntosh apple tree. This phenomenon is true across many fruit tree varieties. Grafting allows us to get around this fact by joining a cutting from a known variety onto a generic root. This workshop will discuss the physiological features of fruit trees and how these features are used to create this union. Different rootstocks and their effects on the final grafted tree will also be explored. Common grafting techniques will be covered, including saddle, whip-and-tongue and bud grafts. Participants will have an opportunity to practice different grafting techniques and develop the skills to experiment with grafting on their own for many years to come. The workshop will finish with participants grafting their own apple tree to take home to plant. Varieties we expect will be available include: Ananas Reinette, Ashmeade's Kernel, Braeburn, Cox's Orange Pipin, Elstar, Esopus Spitzenburg, Fuji, Gala, Golden Russet, Liberty, Goldrush, Rhode Island Greening, Royal Gala, Rubinette, Wagener, and Winesap.
What to Bring:
A good grafting knife is important for efficient grafting. Knives will be available for use during the course. If you are interested in purchasing a knife and bringing it to the course, we recommend the Victorinox Budding and Grafting Knife. This can be purchased locally at Lee Valley.
Please Note: The course will take place outdoors next to the orchard. There are no washroom facilities, Although we will have a tent for inclement weather, please plan your clothing for forecasted weather.
